Ingredients (Makes 2 Burgers)
For the Patties
- ½ lb (225g) ground beef (80% lean, 20% fat for best juiciness)
- ½ tsp salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
- ½ tsp garlic powder (optional)
- ½ tsp onion powder (optional)
For Assembly
- 2 hamburger buns (brioche or potato buns recommended)
- 2 slices American cheese (or cheddar, Swiss, etc.)
- 1 tbsp butter (for toasting buns)
Classic Toppings (Choose Your Favorites!)
- Lettuce (iceberg or romaine)
- Sliced tomato
- Red onion (thinly sliced) or pickles
- Ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise
- Burger sauce (mix 2 tbsp mayo + 1 tbsp ketchup + 1 tsp relish + dash of hot sauce)
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Prepare the Patties
- Divide the ground beef into two equal portions (about ¼ lb each).
- Gently shape into ½-inch thick patties, slightly wider than the bun (they shrink when cooking).
- Press a small dimple in the center of each patty to prevent bulging.
- Season both sides with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder.
2. Cook the Burgers
- Heat a skillet or grill over medium-high heat.
- Cook the patties for 3-4 minutes per side for medium doneness (adjust time for rare or well-done).
- In the last minute, add a slice of cheese and cover to melt.
3. Toast the Buns
- Spread butter on the cut sides of the buns.
- Toast in a pan or on the grill for 1-2 minutes until golden.
4. Assemble the Burger
Top with the buttered bun.
Spread sauce on the bottom bun.
Add lettuce, tomato, and onion.
Place the cheesy patty on top.
Add pickles, ketchup, or mustard if desired.
